My 1st free moving day in Taipei was busy with visits to public service offices to resume my Taiwanese residency and healthcare, book doctor appointments for checkups, and Cantonese luncheon (廣式饮茶)with two friends in the Grand Hotel Taipei (圓山大饭店金龍廳) with terrific city views. I had to run to catch the shuttle bus (接駁車) from the METRO station, and then leave early so as to miss the tunnel tour.
Taipei Grand Hotel, a 14-story palace-like building, faces Keelung River, nestled against Yangming Mountain, overlooking Songshan in the east and Danshui in the west, a must-visit landmark of Taipei. General Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to Taiwan in 1949 and used this place to impress his guests and host foreign dignitaries. It has Air-raid tunnels hidden beneath as a shelter and an escape route—and one of the world's longest slides.
I was exhausted after a long day, but strolled around the neighborhood near the hotel to survey the restaurant food and pricing. I ended up with a pork chop dinner box (池上.滷排骨便當)only 100 TWD ($3.3USD). Chishang Bento Box in wooden box (池上飯包) probably has more branches than McDonalds in Taiwan. It is so popular due to the best rice used to exported to Japan for the emperor (日本天皇). There is even a 池上飯包文化故事館 CHISHANG LUNCH BOX MUSEUM in Taitung 台東。
