There are two options to discovery the Ionic east coast departing from Catania: to the south — Syracuse, and to the north — Taormina, so I did both.
I took train from Catania to Syracuse to stay one night here and enjoyed the sunset. Syracuse is an ancient town on the sea, and has a well known archaeological zone and a historic centre on the island of Ortygia (Ortigia). “It was once described by Cicero as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all."” I like it better than Taormina as it is not as tourisy.
I walked around Syracuse and the island of Ortigia in hot sun for 3 hrs, took 2-hr break in the hostel, then headed out 6 pm again to the island of Ortigia in milder sun. I visited Catacomba E Sepolcro Di Santa Lucia, Church of Saint Lucia 'al Sepolcr, scuba diving sites, Umbertino Bridge & Small Port, Temple of Apollo, Fountain of Diana, Piazza Duomo, Cathedral, Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, Arethusa source, Maniace Castle, Porta Marina, Porto Grande, etc.
